Controversy erupts over the new Digital Security Law: the Government approves it amid protests and accusations of authoritarianism

The urgent approval of the new Digital Security Law has sparked intense political and social controversy in Spain. The government, led by President Marta Calvo of the United Progressive Party, managed to push the legislation through Congress with a narrow majority, despite strong criticism from the opposition and numerous civic groups.

The law, presented as a tool to strengthen national cybersecurity and combat disinformation, allows the Executive to monitor electronic communications in situations deemed to pose a “risk to institutional stability.” Although the government insists that such interventions will be subject to judicial oversight, critics denounce a lack of clear safeguards and warn about the vague and potentially abusive use of terms such as “risk” or “sensitive information.”

The opposition leader, Ignacio Domènech of the Conservative Alliance, described the measure as a “democratic outrage” and accused the government of using fear as an excuse to implement “an unprecedented model of control.” Various organizations, including Amnesty International and the Platform for Digital Rights, have also raised their voices, announcing legal challenges before the Constitutional Court and calling for mass protests across the country. The first major demonstration took place last night in front of the Congress of Deputies, where thousands gathered under the slogan “Not in my name.” Although the protest was largely peaceful, some clashes with police were reported, resulting in 12 arrests and several minor injuries.

The government continues to insist that the law is “necessary and proportionate” in the face of growing digital threats. However, mounting public pressure, ongoing legal challenges, and warnings from legal experts about possible conflicts with European regulations suggest a long and tense political and institutional road ahead.
