Kharg Island: the strategic hub behind Iran’s energy power

Kharg Island is one of the most strategic locations in the world in terms of energy and geopolitics. Located in the Persian Gulf, about 25 kilometers off the coast of Iran, this small island of just 20 km² plays a disproportionately important role in Iran’s economy and in the global oil supply. Its privileged location, close to major offshore oil fields and with access to deep waters, allows the entry and loading of large supertankerssomething essential to its function as the country’s main export terminal.

Kharg accounts for approximately 90% of Iran’s oil exports, making it the true energy heart of the nation. The island hosts massive storage facilities with capacity for millions of barrels of crude oil, as well as advanced infrastructure for the simultaneous loading of multiple vessels. As a result, a large portion of the Iranian state’s revenue depends directly on the operation of this enclave, giving it critical importance at both national and international levels.

Its importance, however, goes far beyond Iran. Given its role in the global flow of oil, any disruption to Kharg’s operations can have immediate effects on international markets, causing fluctuations in crude oil prices and impacting economies around the world. Moreover, its proximity to the Strait of Hormuz one of the most important maritime routes for global energy trade further reinforces its strategic value within the global energy system.

From a geopolitical perspective, Kharg Island is considered a high-value target in conflict scenarios. Its vulnerability and its direct impact on Iran’s economy make it a key element in regional military planning. An attack or blockade of the island would represent a significant blow to Iran’s financial capacity and could alter the balance of power in the Middle East. For this reason, Kharg has historically been under strict protection and surveillance measures.

Beyond its current relevance, the island also holds significant historical value. For centuries, it was an active trading center in the Persian Gulf and an important hub in the pearl trade. Throughout history, it has been controlled by various powers, including Portugal and the Netherlands, and it still preserves archaeological remains of great interest, including vestiges of ancient civilizations and religious sites.

In short, Kharg Island is a clear example of how a small territory can exert global influence. Its role as the backbone of Iran’s oil exports, its strategic location, and its importance in the international geopolitical context make it a key enclave whose stability affects both Iran’s economy and the global energy balance.
